The trade-off is cost and crowds — prices reach their annual high over the Christmas–New Year period, so booking early pays off. December delivers Phuket's most reliable weather. The northeast monsoon keeps the Andaman coast dry and sunny, with daytime air temperature around 28–32°C and comfortable nights of 22–24°C — often the coolest, freshest evenings of the year. Humidity drops from its wet-season peak, so the heat feels pleasant rather than oppressive. Any rain is usually confined to brief showers early in the month; by mid-to-late December, day after day of clear skies is the norm.
Sea conditions and swimming
The sea in December is at its best: water temperature around 29°C, generally calm and clear, with only light waves on most west-coast beaches. This is prime swimming and snorkelling weather. Rip currents are far less of a concern than in the monsoon months, but the flag system still applies — swim between the flags where lifeguards are on duty, and take extra care on the exposed beaches after any windy spell.

December's mood is festive from start to finish. The season traditionally opens with a major yacht regatta based at Kata Beach in early December, filling the bay with sails — a free spectacle from the shore. National Father's Day and King Bhumibol's birthday fall on 5 December, a public holiday marked across the island. Then come Christmas and New Year: hotels, beach clubs and restaurants lay on festive dinners and parties, and New Year's Eve brings fireworks and celebrations along Patong and the main beaches.

Budget-focused visitors, or those who prefer quiet beaches, will do better in the shoulder months or the first half of December.
