Phuket airport sits in the far north of the island near Mai Khao, while Patong is on the central-west coast, so every route runs the length of the west side or the central bypass. Distance is only part of the story. The single biggest variable is Patong Hill — the steep, winding Kathu pass on the final approach, where slow trucks and heavy traffic can add 15–20 minutes. Time of day matters too: the late-afternoon and early-evening rush (roughly 16:00–19:00) is the slowest window, and rain during the May–October monsoon further slows the descent into Patong. High season (November–April) brings more vehicles overall, especially around holidays.

If you are arriving late, travelling with family, or carrying a lot of luggage, a pre-booked private transfer or airport taxi is worth the extra baht for a direct, fixed-price ride with a driver who knows Patong Hill. Solo travellers and couples on a budget can use a ride-hailing app for a similar door-to-door service, usually a little cheaper. Backpackers with time to spare and light bags will find the Phuket Smart Bus the best value, provided their arrival lines up with the schedule.

Official airport taxis and shared minibuses are booked at clearly marked counters in the arrivals area of the international terminal — you pay at the desk and are matched with a driver outside. Ride-hailing apps (Grab, Bolt, inDrive) are ordered from your phone; follow the airport's signed ride-hailing pickup point. The Phuket Smart Bus departs from a marked stop outside the terminal and can be paid for on board or via its app.
